Electric Car

August 15, 2013

Barring the occasional fixation on an object for a few weeks (*cough*lightsabres*cough*), for the most part I don’t pine over items or things.  Just not something I generally do.  Except for this, right now:  I want an electric car.

I had the fortune of driving BMW’s converted 1-series test bed vehicle for a dozen or so miles and came away from it thoroughly loving it.  As I think about it more and more, I keep getting more and more excited for the beauty of the electric car… no gas and no tailpipe emissions, natch, but also no vibration, quiet, no silly wasting of fuel at the long stoplights on the way home (as I once heard it put, it’s like 300 horses just jumping up and down, doing nothing) or while in traffic, instant on, no oil changes, tune ups, cooling, servicing is so much easier, less often, no need for the oil and other chemicals for those service trips, potential for easy awesome all-wheel drive, smooth acceleration, no needing to stop at a gas station most of the time, maybe more luggage space or different body configuration, and, most of all, whenever I let off the accelerator I am generating fuel, recharging the battery.  I just love that.

Of course, every time I start the car, this would go through my head:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAv6M1Bai0c

And, doubly of course, depending on the vehicle I get, I might just well be able to make that the car’s startup sound.

Right now I have just over 125k miles on my car after 13 years, so I’ve got a lot of life left in my car, and I plan on driving it into the ground and getting the most out of it before replacing it.  By then, gen 4 or even 5 electric cars ought to be on the market, so I’ll have my pick of really cool vehicles.

Until then, I shall pine away.
