November 3, 2014Stone Sculpture Museum by Tadao Ando
When I first saw this project, it was by flipping a page in a magazine. I looked at the photo spread, and thought “Wow… that is some gorgeous and clean forms, with an exquisite juxtaposition of wood and concrete.”
Then I saw it was by Tadao Ando, and it all made sense.
Using wood from an old barn to form the roof structure, glazing the frame to let in scads of light, and then placing it atop his signature silky concrete of interlocking volumes, this museum is not complex, but the spaces created are very sweet indeed. It is Zen and dramatic at the same time.
