Abstract White + Colour = Cool

There’s a neighboring building you can see from the back parking lot at work.  It’s not a particularly good or pretty facade, but it’s got a certain rigorous geometric rhythm to it between its walls and dark tall windows, and some years ago they painted it bright bright white.  This white and black rhythm, coupled with a little balcony area that provides some shadow relief, somehow turns the banal facade into a surprisingly interesting abstract sculpture or painting.  Further, the pure white contrasts heavily (and not only with the black) with its surroundings, including the sky and the trees… something that is even more impressive as a few of them turn colour during the limited autumn here:


I most certainly wouldn’t want most or even many buildings to look like this one, but there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about this that makes it very effective as a one-off object in the sub-urban landscape.
