Architecture Monday

February 8, 2016

This one’s just around the corner (well, figuratively) from me. A little adaptive reuse (yay!) by Olson Kundig architects, replete with the touches and details that make their work, well, work.

I like to call these types of projects “facadomies” – cutting off the existing facade and replacing it with something new. In this case, to transform an old café to create a small and straightforward gallery, full of great light and with a dynamism that invites interest and entry.

Architecture is all about space, and space is always more than the sum of the parts that create it. I’ve worked on a few facadomies during my career, and sometimes it takes but a little work to tweak a building and elevate the experience within.
